Split the Tips

Splitting tips between front and back of house

First decide what part of the total goes to each role, for example 60% to the floor, 30% to the kitchen and 10% to the bar. Then each role splits its part among its people, by hours or equally.

How it is calculated

In the example, the floor takes 60% of €487.50 and splits it between Ana and Carlos by their hours: Ana, with 8 h, gets €156.00. The kitchen and the bar, with one person each, keep their whole part.

A worked example

€487.50 in tips between four people who worked 26 h in total. The figures come from the same calculation as the calculator.

PersonHoursRoleGets
Ana8 hFloor€156.00
Carlos7 hFloor€136.50
Laura6 hKitchen€146.25
Pedro5 hBar€48.75
Total26 h€487.50

How it was calculated

  • Floor · 60%: €292.50 ÷ 15 h = €19.50 per hour
  • Kitchen · 30%: €146.25 ÷ 6 h ≈ €24.38 per hour
  • Bar · 10%: €48.75 ÷ 5 h = €9.75 per hour

Breakdown per person

  • Ana: €156.00 (Floor · 60%) → €156.00
  • Carlos: €136.50 (Floor · 60%) → €136.50
  • Laura: €146.25 (Kitchen · 30%) → €146.25
  • Pedro: €48.75 (Bar · 10%) → €48.75

No rounding needed: the amounts are exact.

When it works well

  • When the kitchen or the bar do not receive tips directly but share the work of the service.
  • When each role has a different number of people and you do not want that to decide its share.
  • If you would rather each role counted differently per hour worked, use the points split.

To the cent, always

The split always adds up to the exact total. If rounding leaves spare cents, they go to whoever had the largest fraction, and the calculator shows you.
